Creative Movement Course

The Creative Dancing Self: a study of movement improvisation to expand movement range and potential within and beyond the dancer’s technique - a course for dancers and dance teachers

Instructor: Marcia Plevin, American dancer, choreographer, dance movement therapist ( BC-DMT), counsellor (NCC), Trainer of Inspirees dance therapy training program

Description

Inspirees Creative Movement Course (i-CM) is based on Creative Movement–method Garcia-Plevin, a discipline with the objective to awaken and deepen the sense of body/mind unity through the discovery of one’s movement potential and unique movement style.  The choice of dance as an artistic form means needing to express oneself through movement.  It can be satisfying to acquire expression through a specific technique which molds and shapes the body in order to produce a particular style.  The focus to excel in a technique may often not leave room for the dancer to explore, communicate with or value his/her creative resources.   This course will teach the dancer skills for connecting to a life force similar to the Taoist concept of being in harmony with nature.  Inner movement impulses will develop into dances from different forms of improvisation in order to access the creative potential.  The intention of the course is to liberate fluidity and spontaneity in movement, presence in stillness,  and to experience how one’s inner resources can enrich performance.

The course will :

  • Initiate new modes of experiencing how the dancer’s body/mind remains in the present  in order to listen and perceive  one’s unique movement.  The objective is perceiving, listening and responding to the synergy between presence and creativity.
  • Provide skills to stimulate and amplify the dancer’s ability to access different body connections and use of space.  These skills can be used in the teaching of dance.
  • Take into account the differences of cultural attitudes towards creative expression that  may impede or liberate creativity.

Provide experiences in using image, symbol and metaphor for stimulating a dancer’s response to a movement exercise.  Dance teachers will learn how to incorporate this type of expression in teaching dance.
