Introduction to Dance Therapy

Dance/Movement Therapy is the psychotherapeutic use of movement, and is based on the assumption that mind and body are in constant interaction. Through the use of movement exercises and theoretical material, we will work with basic principles of movement, relationships in movement, and movement as communication and expression. This workshop will explore the study of the fundamental nature of movement and improvisation in dance/movement therapy.  The course will introduce theoretical concepts and practical application of dance/movement therapy in a therapeutic context, focusing primarily on the work of early dance/movement therapists Marian Chace, Blanche Evan, and Mary Whitehouse. The workshop will consist of didactic presentation of theoretical concepts and movement improvisation exercises.

The primary goal of this workshop is to introduce the basic constructs of dance/movement therapy through exploring the work of Marian Chace, including mirroring, joining, and relationship-building through movement; Blanche Evan, including functional technique, projective technique, and complex improvisation; and Mary Whitehouse, including Authentic Movement and inner-directed movement.

The objectives of the workshop are:

1.      To gain a beginning understanding of the theory and practice of dance/movement therapy as developed by early practitioners.

2.      To gain an understanding of some basic principles of movement observation.

3.      To gain a beginning understanding of how to develop therapeutic relationships in movement.

Students will gain an understanding of the material through participating in a process that will facilitate a personal exploration of self through movement, writing, and discussion.
