About Dance Therapy

Dance therapy, or dance movement therapy is the psychotherapeutic use of movement and dance for emotional, cognitive, social, behavioral andphysical conditions. As a form of expressive therapy, DMT is founded on the basis that movement and emotion are directly related. The ultimate purpose of DMT is to find a healthy balance and sense of wholeness.

Dance as therapy came into existence as a marriage of sorts between modern dance and psychology. Its was pioneered by Marian Chace and Mary Whitehouse, who started dance therapy in the 1930s and 1950s, on the East Coast and West Coast respectively.   Other three prime sources in the development of dance therapy in America includes Trudi Schoop (improvisational development touch), Lijjan Espenak (European training integrated into Adlerian depth psychotherapy) and Rudolf Laban (observation and notation system).  When the American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA) was founded in 1966,  dance therapy gained professional recognition.  And the work of Laban even brought science into dance therapy.
