Authentic Movement Course - Developing Awareness of One’s Own Experience

Description

This course will focus on the recognition, acknowledgement, and exploration of one’s own impulses to move. Through the use of Authentic Movement and other improvisation exercises, students will be encouraged to explore their impulses, needs, and demands; and how to recognize them as they arise. Through participation in class movement exercises, class members will begin to examine both interpersonal and intrapersonal aspects of moving. Through this approach students will be introduced to the work of understanding and integrating movement, sensation, and emotion. The course will emphasize the need for awareness of one’s own experience as mover in preparation for learning to see and contain the experience of other movers (patients/clients). This course will meet for 4 days, 7.5 hours per day (30 hours total), and will equal 2 credit hours.

Goal

The primary goal of this course is to begin to recognize one’s own movement impulses and preferences, and to consider how to use awareness of these impulses and preferences to gather information about clients, and to use this information in dance/movement therapy sessions.

Objectives

1. To gain a beginning ability to recognize one’s own movement impulses and preferences as they might emerge in dance/movement therapy sessions.

2. To gain a beginning understanding of the relationship between movement, sensation, and emotion.

3. To gain a beginning awareness of one’s own movement experience as preparation for witnessing the movement experiences of clients/patients.

EMBODIED LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP

Shanghai China Oct 8th 2016

Instructor: Peng Yongwen(David)

Theories on best leadership practices abound, and tend to focus on analysis of ways of thinking rather than on what we call the embodiment of leadership. This workshop will offer participants an opportunity to:

  • discover their own preferences and patterns in leadership practices and behaviors,
  • to experiment with adding to these choices,
  • and begin to utilize perception skills in observing and interpreting leadership styles in others.

Application

As there are limited places for each class (maximum 20 participants), we will make a selection on the applications. To apply, please request an application form by email dmt@inspirees.com, or call Katee Shen (86)15911509565.

EMBODIED LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP

Shanghai China Oct 9th & 10th 2016

Theories on best leadership practices abound, and tend to focus on analysis of ways of thinking rather than on what we call the embodiment of leadership. This workshop will offer participants an opportunity to:

  • discover their own preferences and patterns in leadership practices and behaviors,
  • to experiment with adding to these choices,
  • and begin to utilize perception skills in observing and interpreting leadership styles in others.

The movement analysts, Karen Studd and Cat Maguire, will lead workshop participants through a series of exercises, scenarios, and observations based on the Laban/Bartenieff Movement System (LBMS) through the practice of “Whole Movement”, an approach designed to introduce participants to embodied empathic presentation skills in engaging with others.

Instructor: Karen Studd, CMA, RSMT, RSME

Karen has a Master’s degree in Dance from University of Oregon and became a CMA, through the Laban/Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies(LIMS) Seattle based Program which subsequently became the Integrated Movement Studies program. Studd is also a Registered Somatic Movement Therapist and Registered Somatic Movement Educator through ISMETA (International Somatic Movement Education and Therapy Association). For over twenty years Studd has served as a Program Coordinator and has taught in LBMS training programs in the US, Canada, Europe, Mexico and Israel.

Karen has taught for the Dance Departments of the University of Oregon, the University of Wisconsin, George Washington University and George Mason, where she is a tenured faculty. As a teacher of Movement Analysis she is focused on personal and professional development through movement. Although she came to the Laban/Bartenieff work through the art of dance, Studd sees herself as movement educator/artist, and dance as a highly specialized area of application within the larger body of knowledge that is movement itself. Her interest is in the understanding of the importance of human movement across all disciplines. Studd is a co-author of EveryBody is a Body, a text on the phenomenon of human movement. She is currently involved in research projects linking a somatic understanding of human movement to the domain of digital technology and in unpacking the components of human movement as they are linked to the experience and expression of emotion that is, the motion(s) of human emotions.
